National Team Tryouts
Just wanted to give a quick update of the first BC tryouts to the WCMBHA Board and the Associations. At the end of this first report, there is an urgent press release I would like to get out not just to association’s but to their Directors of Coaching so it can get to the COACHES and to the PLAYERS!
First BC tryouts were held this past Sunday afternoon at the Hockey House in Langley. Leading up to it not that it was asked for but many players in the U17 and U19 divisions emailed or called to say had to work, etc but will be there for the other two. So in saying this, the first session turn out was pretty good. In the U19 I felt it was the best turn out for this division for an open tryout within the last three years. We had approx. 26, 5 of which were goalies. In the U17 another approx. 24-26 turned out, one goalie but know two others that were sick or working and others coming to the last two.
In the U15 it was a struggle start, we only had 16 out, four of which were goalies. As the U15 Head Coach was just announced the day before to the coach (Press Release for WCMBHA site will be up tonight), this age group is really a verbal draw as it is the first year of the program. We need to get the word out not just to association websites but needs to get it to the DOC, and those appropriate divisions coaches, managers and parents.
I would like all associations to please send this portion below directly to your DOC, so it can get to the teams in the MAJOR and MINOR AGED DIVISIONS. Thank you for your help in building a strong provincial team!

Call for Head Coach Position for BC U15 rep team
Re-Posted on 03/12/2013
BC National Ball Hockey Program
WCMBHA of BC’s goal is to build a program that is recognized as the best not only in our province but across the country. We have a reputation of competing, with the teams we have sent, at a high level in all the past Junior National divisions. Not only have we built a reputation on the floor, but also outside of the arena. We have sent many teams across the country and have always had positive feedback on how well the players behaved throughout the entire trip and respected the cities that we have visited.
With the upcoming 2013 Junior Nationals coming up this summer in Oakville, Ontario- the WCMBHA of BC Executive have notified CBHA that our province will be sending one team in each division to the Nationals. We are taking applications for coaches interested in the U15 (players born 1998 & 1999) Division. This team will be based on overall tryouts hosted by WCMBHA of BC for this age group and players will be selected to this team after an invite tryout session is completed. The Head Coach position is a one year term commitment, which is a great start to get in to the program for posted positions in future years as well.

WCMBHA Press Release
(Monday, March 18, 2013)
Two BC Coaches named for upcoming Nationals in Ontario
On behalf of WCMBHA and all our members in BC, it is with great
pleasure to announce two of our Head Coaches to our BC National
Program. These coaches have shown over and over again the dedication
they have to minor ball hockey. They have the full respect of their
home associations and have contributed instrumental amounts of time to
the game.
Appointed to the U17 BC Thunder provincial team is Dave Weloy from
Maple Ridge, BC. Dave has been coaching high level ball hockey
starting at his first WCC tournament in 2007. In 2010 he came on board
as an Assistant Coach with the U15 West Coast Wolverines where the
team won National bronze in Waterloo, Ontario. He continued in the
Assistant role at the 2011 Nationals with the U15 team coming up short
by one goal in the bronze game against Edmonton after beating the 2011
National champions Beeton, Ontario and knocking them down to the B
pool that year. In 2012 Dave was appointed as Head Coach of the second
U17 BC team entered at the Nationals held in Vernon, BC. With tight
scores in the round robin, his team went on to beat Saskatchewan in
the bronze game. Dave is a well respected coach at all levels of play
and has full respect for all his players and staff on and off the
floor.
Appointed to the U19 West Coast Express is Roy Shortridge of Delta,
BC. Roy’s demeanor and humour along with his knowledge of the game has
taking him to many “big games” over the years. Roy played 17 years of
mens ball hockey before moving on to the minor side as a Coach. Roy
has seen his fair share of WCC tournaments and in 2010 became an
Assistant Coach with the U15 West Coast Wolverines. A bronze at the
Nationals in 2010, he came back as a father/spectator at the 2011
Nationals in Saskatoon where he continued to scout talent. In 2012 Roy
was appointed as Head Coach of the A U17 team at the Nationals in
Vernon, the Thunder came home with a National silver. Roy looks
forward to the first tryouts and being apart of building this team for
the road to Ontario. He is excited to work with this age group and
knows the talent these players bring with them as they have played
through the system. On and off the floor Roy is always focused on
developing new players and always encouraging players he has known for
years.
The U15 Head Coach position is currently taking applications until
March 28th. We look forward in the coming weeks to announce the U15
Head Coach. Our teams will be traveling to Oakville, Ontario to
compete against other provinces for national gold. As well as
competing as provincial teams - players will be scouted and evaluated
by Team Canada Staff for the team selections for U16, U18 and U20
Worlds that will be held next year in Slovakia. Open Tryouts for the
BC teams will be posted and announced to Associations in the coming
days. As a note, we are looking at the first being Sunday, April 7th.
Watch for updates at
www.wcmbh.com and your local Association websites
for info on our BC National Program and tryouts. The Nationals are
from Wednesday, July 31st to Sunday, August 4th.
Yours in sport,
Gary Slavin,
WCMBHA BC National Program DIrector
